– Sara Cavallo Receives Miller Research Award

Sara Cavallo recently received the Miller Graduate Fellowship from the Penn State Department of Geography to support her dissertation research in western Uganda. This support will enable Sara to complete the second-half of her fieldwork in Fort Portal, Uganda. During this portion of her field studies, Sara will be conducting research with farmers, extension agents, NGO workers, and policy makers to understand and map the knowledge networks and practices of plant disease mitigation and management that are crucial to sustainability and food security.

– Karl and Sara Receive Borlaug Research Fellowship

Karl and Sara Cavallo recently received the U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security graduate research grant for 2016-2017 for Sara’s Doctoral Research “Linking Banana Xanthomonas Wilt and Agro-ecological Intensification to Food Practices in Kabarole, Uganda.” Sara will be in the field this year tracing networks of farmers, scientists, and agricultural extension agents from Fort Portal, Uganda to Montpellier, France in order to understand how a certain banana disease, banana Xanthomonas wilt, and associated mitigation strategies have reshaped agri-food systems and knowledge networks.
