– Lab Members’ Field Research: Summer 2016 and Ongoing
Summer 2016 was a busy and productive time for field research activities. Yooinn Hong completed the final phase of dissertation fieldwork on agrobiodiversity, home gardens, and economic and agrarian transitions on Jeju Island, Korea; Russell Hedberg finished field research on soil health associated with management practices among certified organic and non-certified ecological growers in the foodshed of New York green markets; Megan Baumann completed fieldwork in Nicaragua for a master’s thesis on citizen science projects for agrobiodiversity and climate change adaptation and their impacts on landscape management and cognition; and Ramzi Tubbeh conducted field research for a master’s thesis on territorial dynamics, forest extraction, and indigenous rights in the Peruvian Amazon. Meanwhile Nathan Clay continued dissertation fieldwork on agrobiodiversity and commercial agriculture in mountain areas of Rwanda, and Karl conducted fieldwork in central Peru on agrobiodiversity and human dietary diversity, nutrition, and health as part of the new research in conjunction with the IIN in Lima (See the item in Notes and News Item on Support Received for GeoSyntheSES Efforts in New Research on Agrobiodiversity, Nutrition, and Health, 2015-2017).
– Sara Cavallo Receives Miller Research Award
Sara Cavallo recently received the Miller Graduate Fellowship from the Penn State Department of Geography to support her dissertation research in western Uganda. This support will enable Sara to complete the second-half of her fieldwork in Fort Portal, Uganda. During this portion of her field studies, Sara will be conducting research with farmers, extension agents, NGO workers, and policy makers to understand and map the knowledge networks and practices of plant disease mitigation and management that are crucial to sustainability and food security.
– Karl’s Fulbright Research in Peru
The Fulbright Scholarship Board and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department conferred to Karl the Fulbright Award for the purpose of Educational Program Design and Evaluation in the Environmental Sciences and Sustainability in Latin America, with the focus on Peru. Karl’s activities comprised a core of his sabbatical and were coordinated with faculty and students at Peruvian universities, especially the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in Lima and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Augustín in Arequipa. Martha Bell, formerly a GeoSyntheSES Lab member, is now appointed to the PUCP faculty. One of the first papers stemming from the research associated with this award is currently under review.
