Former lab member Sara Cavallo has begun a post-doctoral appointment on NSF-funded research directed by Dr. Anne Short Gianotti in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University. Anne’s research has recently intersected with the Lab in a BU workshop on environment-livelihood interactions in contexts of diversification, migration, and other political-ecological changes.

– Zach and Cameron join GeoSyntheSES Lab
Zach Goldberg has joined the Lab to undertake Ph.D research on the agriculture-energy nexus in the Northeastern U.S. Recently, Zach has completed his Qualifying Exam (congrats!) and now is further developing his Ph.D research.
Cameron Franz is a geography undergraduate who was the intern in a seminar of first-year students that Karl taught on the topic agriculture, food, urbanization, and climate change in the fall semester (see ‘New Courses’ item)
– Sara’s dissertation approved by her Ph.D committee: goes bananas
Sara sailed successfully through the meeting of her Ph.D dissertation committee in December. The committee “went bananas” over her dissertation that treats farmer knowledge, biosecurity, and governance related to banana plant disease in Uganda.
– Ongoing fieldwork and funding updates, Marie Louise, Gabriel
Marie Louise’s fieldwork has gone well in Nepal and is being supported by the Pruitt Dissertation Fellowship of the national Supporting Women in Geography (SWG). Gabriel continues fieldwork in Oaxaca, Mexico, with new support of the NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement (DDRI) fellowship. Huge congratulations to both Marie Louise and Gabriel on these successful grants.
